A Paper Boss Buying Guide
Let’s face it, being responsible for all your business consumables can become a bit tiresome. The last thing you want to worry about is whether, or not, you have ordered the right till rolls. Luckily, Paper Boss has you covered. There is no need for you to try and navigate this minefield on your own.
According to Gustav Prinsloo, Paper Boss’ Marketing Director and Till Roll Guru, there are a couple of basics to consider:
- Type
- Use
- Size
- Quality
- Quantity
- Price
Type
When we talk type, we are talking about the type of paper used in till rolls – Thermal or Bond.
Thermal
As we explained in a previous post A till slip is more important than you think, we explained “thermal till slips are created when heat is applied to chemically coated paper. This heat transfer produces the information that makes up your till slip. There is no ink or toner used in this process.”
Bond
Bond paper is what we use in our home and business printers every day. There is no heat transfer, and you need a ink cartridge to print on bond paper.
Use
Yes, we are talking till rolls, but to many people, these include credit card rolls. Although this is not entirely correct, the use of the paper roll you are looking for is really important. Not to fear, this is easily remedied and all you need to remember is the following:
Credit Card Rolls
Width – The width of credit card rolls is 57mm.
Diameter – The diameter is measured from one edge to the other on the side of the roll.
Till Rolls
Width – Receipt (till) printers tend to us 80mm, although, some of the older printers use till rolls with a width of 37mm and 44mm and there are printers which use rolls which are 110mm.
Diameter – This is the same as with the Credit Card rolls. The diameter is measured from one edge of the side of the roll, to the other edge.

Size
Credit Card Rolls
There are 3 sizes of Thermal Credit Card Rolls available from Paper Boss
- 57 x 30 – This is the size that fits hand-held credit card machines (the same ones we use when we fill our car at the petrol station) use.
- 57 x 40 – This is the most commonly used size of credit card roll. It fits most credit card machines; however, if you use this size in a hand-held machine, the chances are that the flap will not close which covers the credit card roll on the machine.
- 57 x 50 – There are some credit card machines which can accommodate the diameter of this credit card roll.
All of the above sizes are sold in boxes of 100 rolls.

Some of the most commonly used sizes of Thermal Till rolls, sold by Paper Boss, are:
- 37 x 50 – Sold in a box of 100 rolls
- 44 x 70 – Sold in a box of 100 rolls
- 57 x 57 – Sold in a box of 100 rolls

Sizes of Bond Till Rolls

- 57 x 76 – Sold in a box of 100 rolls
- 76 x 76 – Sold in a box of 50 rolls
- 76 x 76 (2-Part) – Sold in a box of 50 rolls
- 76 x 76 (3-Part) – Sold in a box of 60 rolls
Quality
The higher the quality of paper, the clearer and crisper the print will be.
The quality of your rolls can be maintained for up to 3-years if you make sure you store it properly:
- Store in a dark place (Keeping them in the sealed box they come in will help with this)
- Store them in an area of low humidity
- Store in an area where the temperature is below 25 degrees Celsius
Quantity
The amount of rolls you purchase is entirely dependent on the space you have available to store them and how many till rolls you use in your business.
Price
If you require your till slips to remain clear and crisp, without fading over time, you will need to pay a bit more. However, if you do not require this, you will be able to save some money. Also, the length of till rolls can vary and this can add or subtract from the cost.
Gustav adds, “Something to always remember is that the higher the quantity you buy, the lower the unit cost tends to be. If you have the space to store your till rolls, it is always worthwhile to up your quantity per order placed”!
